should receive their first MOT when they reach 3 years of age.
For exceptions please refer to figure 1.
a car is registered with no prior use on the road, the MOT will
be required three years after the date of manufacture. For example,
a car registered "from new" on 25th April 2000 will
require its MOT no later than 25th April 2003. If a car is used
as would be the case with an import, the MOT will be required
three years from the end of the year of manufacture. For example
a car manufactured at any time in 2000 will require an MOT no
later than 31st December 2003. There is no grace period given
after these dates.
I get an MOT before it expires?
If you have 30 days or less on your current MOT certificate, provide
J R Motors with your current certificate and he will add these
days onto your new certificate.

does an MOT consist of?
identification number - a vehicle identification number must be
permanently displayed and legible on a vehicle first used on or
after 1 August 1980.
Plate - condition, security, legibility and format of letters/numbers
- condition, operation, security and correct colour. The headlamps
will also be checked to see if the aim is correct.

- all seatbelts installed are checked for type, condition, operation
and security. All compulsory seatbelts must be in place
- front seat secure. Front and rear backseats can be secured in

The fuel cap will need to be opened. Make sure the key is available.
emissions - vehicle meets the requirements for exhaust emission.
These vary on the age and fuel type of the vehicle.

structure - free from excessive corrosion or damage in specific
areas. No sharp edges

should open from inside and outside vehicle. Rear doors may need
to be opened to gain access to testable items.

do I need to do before the test?
· Check that all the seats are clear for the tester to
check the seatbelts.
· Bring old certificate with you
· If the vehicle is diesel, please bring service book for
tester to check the last time the timing belt was replaced.

happens if my vehicle fails its MOT?
will receive a VT30 and can get the MOT repairs completed at J
the vehicle is left at the test station for repairs and is retested
before the end of 10 working days, then only a partial retest
is needed for which no fee may be charged.
the vehicle is removed from the test station for repairs and returned
for retest within 10 working days, then only a partial retest
is needed and a partial retest fee of £25 will be charged.
